Findings

Results of the Studies:

  • Study 1: Confirmatory factor analysis led to the conclusion that a second-order single-factor model provided a good fit to the 12 empathic response items (4 for each dimension of empathic response). Therefore the scale exhibits good correspondence with the construct of empathy and constitutes a reasonable sampling of the conceptual domain.
  • Impact of Empathy appeal on message processing, reactance, and effectiveness: State empathy negatively predicts reactance, but positively predicts: perceived effectiveness, attitude, and behavioral intention.
  • Analyses of Study 2 data are underway, comparing empathy appeal vs. fear appeal regarding their impact on message processing and effectiveness.
